Deslorelin is a synthetic hormone that stimulates the release of the pituitary hormones in the mare that cause ovulation from mature ovarian follicles. Its use permits the mare to be bred at an optimal time for conception with a higher rate of pregnancy.1 Deslorelin is also used in non-pregnant broodmares for the management of their heat cycle.
FDA-approved for use in horses, Deslorelin does not manipulate the timing of ovulation, but rather aids in follicular maturation and ovulation. is currently offered in branded and unbranded forms.
The available literature asserts that prior to administration, it should be determined by rectal palpation and/or ultrasonography that the cyclic estrous mare has an ovarian follicle greater than 30 mm in diameter.1
According to a 2012 study:
- A single dose of 1.8 mg/kg deslorelin acetate induced ovulation in 77% of the additional 191 broodmares
- When comparing treated and untreated broodmares, there was no difference in the interovulatory interval (the number of days between ovulation)
- Pregnancy rates did not differ among treated and untreated broodmares
- All foals born to treated and untreated broodmares were considered normal
Together, these data show that a 1.8-mg/kg dose of this product was safe and effective in inducing ovulation in mares and pregnancy rates for treated mares were similar to those of untreated controls.2
Side effects may include local swelling, heat, and pain at injection sites which usually respond readily to hot compresses and NSAIDs.1 Pregnant women and women of childbearing age should exercise caution when handling deslorelin. Direct contact with the skin should be avoided. If exposure occurs, contact areas should be washed immediately with alcohol followed by soap and water. In case of accidental human injection, a physician should be consulted immediately.3
Deslorelin 1.5 mg/ml from NexGen provides reliable cycle management for breeding mares and non-pregnant broodmares.
