Detomidine Butylscopolammonium Bromide For Equines
In horses with severe pain, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) often do not provide sufficient pain relief. Studies have also shown that the addition of IM morphine (in conjunction with NSAID administration) increases the risk of GI complications, particularly with increasing doses of morphine, which often occurs when morphine is indicated.1 Using a multidrug analgesic mixture allows smaller doses of individual drugs to provide effective relief, reducing risk of adverse side effects.
Detomidine is used primarily as a sedative, anesthetic adjunct, and analgesia, and it is used in horses more often than in other species. When used to treat pain from colic in horses, the duration of effect can be up to several hours. Detomidine also has been administered for epidural analgesia.2 For pain in general, detomidine appears to be more potent and longer acting than xylazine alone.
Butylscopolammonium bromide is a quaternary ammonium compound that has been approved in the United States for the treatment of minor gas colic in horses. A short-acting antispasmodic with no sedative properties, it is also used by some veterinarians to treat esophageal obstruction due to its ability to relax the smooth muscle of the esophagus.
Detomidine 2 mg/ml + Butylscopolammonium bromide 20 mg/ml from NexGen provides superior relaxation and relief from colic symptoms in horses.
